It’s been said that war gaming is both the grandfather and the orphan of Operations Research. Indeed, early war gamers approached their craft with a rigor rarely found today; the results of Interwar gaming at the Naval War College provide ample evidence of this analytical success. Since that early success, Operations Research came into its own as an analytical profession and gaming became confined to the less rigorous role of acclimating executives to different operational environments. Today, war gaming is much more subjective than objective and in most cases is consciously separated from rigorous analysis.
